This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education. Part A: Curriculum music

This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.

  • Our intent for our music curriculum is that children will experience a rich, diverse musical experience supplemented by expert tuition.
  • We follow the Charanga music scheme of learning to ensure effective progression.
  • This is bolstered by external instrumental tuition.
  • Our music curriculum is informed by the Charanga music curriculum and children receive a minimum of 1 hour of music per week – 30 minutes of whole school singing and 30 minutes of music within class.  The school is developing our planning to incorporate the English Model Music Curriculum Scheme developed by Charanga.
  • In KS2, all children have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through whole class tuition. (Y3/4 the recorder; Y5/6 the ukulele)
  • All children have the opportunity to sing weekly as part of our singing assembly
  • KS1 children take part in annual Christmas Nativities and Y5/6 produce an end of year productions where music and song feature heavily.
  • We also perform songs for Harvest festival, Remembrance Day, Christmas, Easter and our Summer Fayre.

Part B: Co-curricular music

This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.

  • Children have the opportunity to learn musical instruments through an external music teacher (This can be subsidised for those children in receipt of pupil premium funding.)
  • Children from Reception to Y6 to attend a weekly choir club, led by a music professional.
  • All pupils also take part in whole school singing weekly.

Part C: Musical experiences

This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

  • School and church based performances including: Harvest, Christmas, leavers service, end-of-term celebrations and school fayres.
  • Annual Christmas Nativity and end of year performance.
  • Annual pantomime bus visit.
  • Events are funded by the school

In the future

This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.

  • Recorder lessons to be introduced for Y3/4
  • Music club opportunities will be increased.
  • Development of the curriculum plan to incorporate new scheme
